LaTeX Help page

LaTeX is 'a document preparation system' used extensively by mathematicians. The links on this page should help you get started.

  • We recommend MiKTeX (free software) as a LaTeX installation for Windows users, or TeX Live (also free) for linux.
  • Example LaTeX document in LaTeX format. You should be able to save this file with a '.tex' extension, and open it in a LaTeX editor such as TeXnicCenter (free Windows software) or WinEdt (Windows shareware) or Kile (free linux software).
  • Example LaTeX document in PDF format (3 pages).  This is what the document above should look like when you compile it.
  • Short Math Guide for LaTeX, written by the American Mathematical Society, showing how to typeset many of the common mathematical symbols that you will need (17 pages).
  • For more obscure symbols (not just mathematical), see the Comprehensive LATEX Symbol List (164 pages).
  • TeX for the Impatient, an online book in PDF format (391 pages).
  • See the LaTeX Project page for links to more documentation.
