Using maths to protect internet purchasing power

New research aims to improve the security and speed of coding techniques used to protect credit and debit card data sent over the internet.

Mathematicians at Royal Holloway, University of London are assessing whether current encryption methods really are secure by subjecting them to rigorous mathematical analysis, while a Bristol University team is exploring whether data could be encrypted more quickly and cheaply than currently possible, without compromising security. Both initiatives are being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
