Summary:

This year is the 300th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Euler, one of the most prolific mathematicians ever. Perhaps his most famous formula, and one regularly voted the best formula in the whole of mathematics is

*e ^{iπ} = -1.*

The talk will explain how Euler discovered this formula, the significance of all of its terms, and why it is of crucial importance to modern technology.
