Department of Mathematics
Royal Holloway University Of London

Our Degree Programmes

At the centre of our teaching programme are the two specialist degrees: the BSc in Mathematics (a three-year degree) and the MSci in Mathematics (a four-year degree). Like all our degree programmes, these are formed from modules or course units. We also offer within the Department a BSc degree in Mathematics with Statistics. This title indicates a more specialized pathway through our mathematics courses and demonstrates to future employers the emphasis of the student's studies.

Single honours courses

In the first year the courses provide a general foundation, and there is a choice in the second term for mathematics specialists: you choose two out of applied mathematics, statistics, and computational mathematics. In each year, the pattern is to have lectures during the first two terms, leaving the third term for revision and examinations.

We also offer many degree programmes that are shared between Mathematics and another department. Courses with the title 'X and Y' comprise equal proportions of X and Y; those called 'X with Y' are 75% X and 25% Y. The large number of available combinations provides the opportunity for you to explore broader interests, and our flexible structure makes it possible to change the balance of your subjects during your time at Royal Holloway. Moreover, those doing one of the specialist mathematics degree programmes also have the opportunity to take courses given by other departments (for example in languages). There are also opportunities for study abroad.
