Computer Security: A Machine Learning Approach

Abstract:

In this thesis, we present the application of machine learning to computer 
security, particularly to intrusion detection. We analyse two learning 
algorithms (NBTree and VFI) for the task of detecting intrusions and compare 
their relative performances. We then comment on the suitability of the NBTree 
algorithm for the intrusion detection task based on its high accuracy and high 
recall. We finally state the usefulness of machine learning to the field of 
computer security and also comment on the security of machine learning itself.
