17/12/10 Hereditarily just infinite groups

A one day meeting on Hereditarily Just Infinite Groups will be held on Friday 17 December 2010 at Royal Holloway, University of London.  The classification of finite simple groups is one of the greatest achievements of 20th century mathematics. In the category of profinite (or subcategory of pro-p groups), the ‘simple’ objects are the so-called just infinite groups. Loosely speaking, the study of these groups reduces to the study of branch groups and hereditarily just infinite groups.
